Introduction:

The "Rosario - Victoria Fixed Link" is a two-lane motorway consisting of 13 bridges connected by 13 embankments over a total length of 59 km across the Rio Paraná fluvial delta. This project is the largest of its kind in South America in terms of length and physical conditions and is essential for local and international East-West road transports for the region of Mercosur.

Bridge over: the Parana River valley

Joins the provincial capital cities of Rosario (Province of Santa Fe) and Victoria (province of Entre Rios)

Kind of Bridge : Cable-stayed bridge (H-pylon, semi-fan arrangement).

Purpose of Bridge:

*The purpose of the bridge was to improve the connection between the north-eastern provinces and the rest of the nation.

*The bridge also serves to facilitate the interaction between the Mercosur countries.

*The Rosario-Victoria Bridge is a response to the increased economic activity and regional commerce and industrial development that affects the provinces of Santa Fé, Córdoba and Entre Rios, as well as the city of Rosario.

Length:

The roadway system includes viaducts, earth filled sections and a cable-stayed bridge, extends for 59.3 km.

The main span of the cable-stayed bridge will be 350 m., 1148.3 ft. with two lateral spans of 120 m.The navigational clearance is 50m over the Paraná River valley.

Deck width: 16 m
Length of main bridge: 608 m

Work started: in April 1998.

Project completed: in March 2002.

Total cost: was approx. $350 million.

Built, maintained and operated by: Puentes del Litoral S.A. under a 25-year concession from the Ministry of Economy and Public Works.

Financing:

As a result of a bidding process, the governmental contribution was $207 million. The remaining $150 million was financed by the construction consortium. The project was also eligible for Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) financing.
Public-private partnership

The project allowed the establishment of a public-private partnership at the federal and provincial levels with the participation of national and foreign investors and private toll operators. The Rosario-Victoria Bridge is a response to the increased economic activity and regional commerce and industrial development that affects the provinces of Santa Fé, Córdoba and Entre Rios, as well as the city of Rosario.

The bridge also provides savings in travel time and fuel consumption, has expanded national and international infrastructure and production and promotes the integration of the countries of Mercosur, the southern South American common market.

Lead contractors:

The consortium was led by experienced international and local construction companies: Impregilo S.p.A. (Italy) and Iglys S.A. (a subsidiary of Impregilo), Hochtief A.E.G. (Germany), Techint S.A.C.E.I. (Argentina), and Benito Roggio e Hijos S.A. (Argentina).

Environmental effort:

By contractual requirement the dredging Joint Venture had to perform its activities in compliance with the ISO 14000 International Standards and the Environmental Management System (EMS) of the main contractor.

The most relevant environmental effect of the dredging activities has been identified in the temporarily damage to water quality. Hydronamic set up a monitoring strategy able to adapt to the continual shift of the dredging activities and to the large variety of the natural system (minor to larger watercourses, marshlands and islands, open water areas).

Rebeca: Hello malu!!!

Ma. Luisa: Hi rebe.... where is Luisa?

Rebeca: I think she is conecting...

Luisa: Hello... malu and rebe!!!

Ma. Luisa: Hi Luisa!!! did you analyze the plan of the house you took??

Luisa: Of course.... we have to talk about that!! This is my house: “FALLINGWATER”.

Rebeca: Luisa.... why did you analyze that house?

Luisa: Because as I said in the text about my dreams house, I love the direct contact with the environment and I also love the sound of the water falling from the highest part of the house till it gets to the ground.

Ma. Luisa: Yes....the falling house!! That is nice.... I also like the contact with the nature....

Rebeca: Me too… My house is located at the beach.... I love the contact with the ocean, beaches, lakes... I choose a house called “CASA B”.

Luisa: Yes, but there is one big difference ... my climate is very cold and I need a fireplace to warm me on winter.

Ma. Luisa: my house is more like Luisa’s house because it is located in a mountain and the climate is cold too. My house is the “FARNSWORTH HOUSE”.

I can see that for the three of us the contact with the nature is very important...

Luisa: Rebe and how do you go to your house? To access to my house there is a drive entrance with horizontal elements on the top.

Rebeca: The entrance to my house is from the road, which is the upper floor from the beach. That level is just for that function.

Ma. Luisa: Mine too... the access is an upper level standing several feet of the ground.... It gives you the sensation that is a glass block that disappears on the nature.

Luisa: well, as we can you see, the houses that we choose have interesting things, some of them are similar.

Rebeca: yes, we should design a house with the best things of each one!!

Ma. Luisa: And what about the interior spaces?

Luisa: Well, in my house the sizes of the spaces are just perfect. The living room has big dimensions, the kitchen is compact and the rooms are big enough to have the bathrooms inside of them.

Ma. Luisa: That is good!! In contrast, my house works as a unit. Because all the spaces have a relationship and they are separate just for furniture... It’s a large room that has the social area and bathrooms and services area in a solid box inside the big glass box…

Rebeca: My house is different from the two of you. The spaces are separated in three levels. The parent’s level is just below the entrance level, the children’s level is on the beach level and the social level is between them, so it works as a separator. The levels are communicated by a lateral and exterior stair, which is rested to one of the walls.

Luisa: wow… the three houses are distributed in three different ways…

Ma. Luisa: yes, but I think that the three houses are great and each one works very good depending on what the architect and the clients want.

Luisa: Malu, did you read the text about the Rhythm?

Ma. Luisa: Yes... and you Rebe?

Rebeca: Of course....

Luisa: Well.... what do you think about the article?

Ma. Luisa: I think it’s an interesting text!!

Rebeca: yes... and we can learn a lot of things about architecture too!!!

Luisa: The text talks about illumination, shadows and also how the combination of them, gives the sensation of sequence which conform a Rhythm.

Ma. Luisa: yes, the orientation of the space, the weather and the clime can give different cycles and rhythms in a specific building.

Rebeca: yes, I red about that in the text. It says that to perceive the whole cycle takes from before sunrise till after sundown.

Ma. Luisa: When I red the text it reminds me the presentation we did in our Architecture’s theory class. Do you remember?

Rebeca: Which presentation? The one we did with Teacher Villota?

Ma. Luisa: yes, that one!!!
Luisa: I remember we talk about the Gesù Cathedral, where the illumination is very important since the light gives rhythm to this religious building.

Rebeca: Yes... and we noticed that the nave is illuminated, the transept is dark and finally the abside has a solid illumination.
Ma. Luisa: Talking about Rhythm and religious buildings St. Peters Cathedral comes to my mind, because the corridor has the columns on the side and that takes you to the principal door.

Luisa: Yes, but that isn’t related with illumination.

Rebeca: Of course it is!!! I’ve been there and the columns create shadows that give you a perfect rhythm!! I’ll never forget that, because it was an interesting experience!!
Ma. Luisa: that is true, Rebe! But when we talk about rhythm I always remember the Giraldy’s House by Barragán.... Do you remember?

Rebeca: no, I don’t.... Luisa, do you remember what house is that?

Luisa: Yes, that’s the one with a large corridor....t hat gives to the house a lot of illumination and a specific rhythm...

Rebeca: ah I know!! Well, but the text also talks about rituals....

Ma. Luisa: I know but many rituals have a relation with illumination and shadows.

Luisa: well, to conclude this part I want to make sure that we are clear with the importance of natural illumination in any architectural project.

Rebeca: yes, we are, and we have to include those things when we are designing!!

Ma. Luisa: well, what do you think about rituals?

Luisa: For me is very funny how people decide part of their life depending on the season...

Rebeca: yes.... you see how they move the table back and force.

Ma. Luisa: As we saw in the text of illumination that is very important. Since the “Pueblos of the southwest”, the Egyptian with the pyramids and so on, in almost all the cases, they always use the natural illumination to create a rhythm.

Luisa: Well I think we really understood the whole text. What we have to do know is remember all those things so we can actually use them in our career.

Montreal.....a city to discover!

We saw an interesting video about Montreal in class. We learned a lot of things about the Montreal´s remarkable architecture. The first part of the video showed the historic part of the city “Old Montreal”. Then we saw a tour around this cosmopolitan city. It showed many inportant buildings like the St. Joseph Oratory and The Notre Dame Basilica, many parks like: The Olympic Park, Mount Royal and the Japanese Garden. I think it was an excellent video because we learned many things about Motreal like transportation, churches, museums, art, festivals and so on.

“This very combination of historic and modern architecture is the harmonious marriage of the present and the past”. I remenber this interesting statement description of montreal´s architecture because as we saw in the video Motreal is a city to discover, is a combination of many architectural styles.

An example of International Style architecture, a pure expression of its age is another vision, that of a transparent house in a verdant landscape.The house creates a challenging and fascinating interrelationship between itself and the landscaped setting within which it is placed.I desire to create a dialogue between interior and exterior, a house where you can feel the nature, using the steel structure, the glass walls, and stripped down minimalism of the design. As we can see in the Farnsworth house, distinctions between public and private, outside and inside, often disappear. Its design restraint allows the flora to complete its room, while simultaneously placing the interior room’s contents within the natural context when viewed from the exterior. While itself an utterly faithful expression of Internationalism’s simplicity.The house must reflect the relationship of the differents spaces. The house it is not a combinaton of differents areas, it should work as a complete building. For this reason the use of an steel skeleton frame structure provides an exterior armature supporting uninterrupted floor and roof planes without any interuption of the space. All structural steel connections are welded in ways that minimize their visual presence.The access to the house must be in an upper level, standing several feet off the ground.I would like that it have not air-conditioning. So it must have a cross ventilation system by opening the portal and with two hopper windows located at the base of the east wall at the other end of the house.The interior was a single space, one large room, whose major subdivision was provided by a freestanding, longitudinal, asymmetrically placed core containing kitchen, bathrooms and fireplace. A freestanding cabinet-closet close and parallel to the wall bordered the sleeping area without enclosing it. The "living room" area, which spread before the fireplace with a view of the river, was equally suggested rather than defined. The roof and floor slab were cantilevered at both ends, so that the vitreous corners of the room were totally transparent.In general, I want that my house work like a unit, where we can see a large space divided by funtional cabinets, a house where you can feel in a direct contact with the context and you can see the differents areas of the house.

I would like to design the house of my dreams!!!!

I would like to design the house of my dreams. I imagine it great, on the foot of a mountain from where all the city can be appreciated, I want it of a minimalist style, but with contemporary tendencies.
The spaces will be divide by diferents unevennesses in the floor and some specific furniture desing by Le Corbusier, Alvar Aalto and so on. The living room could have a double height and with great large windows, that this designing on the basis of pure and straight lines . I desire that has gardens of vegetation within the house, to create a relaxed and natural atmosphere.
I imagine my house of white colors with a solid game in its main facade where we pruned to appreciate a composition of buckets that are related between if to create a very novel effect. In the interior of the house, I want something very free and simple that it does not have to use architectoniques structures to separate the spaces; if not that these are separated by a game of unevennesses in the floors and by internal furniture. Also I would like that my house to has natural illumination. I want that materials of the house are concrete, steel and glass in order to add texture to the spaces.

Rhythm is the ordered recurrence of elements having a recognizable relationships between then, in architecture is the pattern and spacing of repeating elements such as columns, arches, and other facade elements. Almost all buildings are made of elements that repeat themselves, for example: alternating vertical or horizontal bands of brick wall and windows.

In architecture’s history the rhythm was an important point to study since Egyptian and Romans with the rhythmical freedom, in the gothic period with the repeated vertical lines of wall panels and the Barroque architecture with a dramatic ryhmical complexity of lines, mass and shap.

We can find many types of rhythms: repetition of shapes (vary without destroying rhythmical character), dimensions (vary in size or shape), differences ( rhythmical series, ascending and descending progessions) and the rhythm of linear length or curvatures (changed the length or radius of the curvature).The space is an important concept in the study of architecture. The rhythm of interior and exterior spaces contributes to understand the prupose of the architect’s concept or idea. For example, chaging heights, widths and seatbacks and so on. The use of differents elements and forms with a progression or a specific order create a sense of motion and direction in the interior and exterior space.
